How to create the perfect bob with Japanese cobalt scissors

The bob is the ideal cut for hairdressers wanting to show off their skill at classic, timeless styling. Partly inspired by a revival of retro ‘70s fashions, the bob is already big for 2019, framing the faces of celebrities in photo shoots and on the red carpet. Bobs are one of the most versatile styles and can be adapted to different lengths, colours and textures of hair to suit almost any face shape. However, they require regular trimming by an expert hairdresser using precision scissors.

1. The blunt bob

Many of those in the know are moving away from feathered, chopped or layered hair towards a blunter, cleaner finish. The mid-length bob is also getting left behind. Hand-crafted and lightweight Japanese professional shears are perfect for gliding through hair to create the precise shapes demanded by the shorter above-the-shoulder bob.

2. The rounded bob

An alternative to the blunt bob is the softer and more feminine rounded bob. Japanese hair scissors have an adjustable bolt that can alter the blades to a stylist’s preference for point cuttings into the ends of the hair, effortlessly creating a softer look. Soft and messy bobs look especially cute tucked behind one ear or falling gently over one eye.

3. A-line and asymmetrical bobs

A-line bobs are layered and are short at the back and longer at the front. The asymmetrical bob is traditionally shorter at the back and tapers longer in the front, but it can also be tapered so that one side is longer than the other. These types of bobs have been made famous by pop stars such as Rhianna and Nicki Minaj. An extreme version is the shaved bob, which includes a short cut or shaved side which can be patterned with a shaved design. Another variation is the dramatic ‘Cleopatra’ bob, which boasts an extreme slope from back to front.

So, whether the client wants sleek or curly, straight or wavy, the bob remains the ideal style to suit all face shapes. Blunt styles can thicken thin hair whilst layered edges can soften thick locks. And, if your customer is considering moving from a long to a short style, the bob is a clever way to trial that shorter look before moving on to a more drastic cut. All bobs benefit from the expert cutting provided by professional cobalt scissors.
